It is common for children to experience frustration and challenges when learning any new skill, including sports and physical activities. My role as a coach is to help children build determination and resilience as they learn to overcome frustration and build their confidence. I aim to work 1-on-1 with children struggling first to give them some tips to perform the skill. I also make sure to adjust the skill level to meet them where they are currently at. If a child becomes overwhelmed and emotionally dysregulated, they are welcome to take a water break and a few deep breaths and then come try again.
There is a great episode called “bike” on the Netflix show Bluey that could be a way to help teach your child about determination and learning new skills. The characters experience anger and frustration while trying something new, but they show resilience by continuing to try until they succeed. It is a life skill to bounce back from challenges. Learning new sports skills provides a great opportunity to instill resilience in children.
