Blog #8 – Raising Athletes

NBA star Steve Nash’s dad has some great tips on raising athletes. These tips are for raising both recreational and competitive athletes.

“Winning is not that important. The important thing is to get out there. Stay active, meet people.” – John Nash

How can parents help their child enjoy being physically active for life?

  1. Lead by example – have fun playing sports with your child and let them see you working out or playing sports with friends
  2. Variety – expose your child to a variety of sports and physical activities
  3. Praise – encourage your child and give positive feedback to build their confidence and motivation
  4. Friendships – building teamwork skills and learning how to deal with winning and losing are skills for life
  5. Play for Fun – focus on the joy of being active, don’t prioritize winning over having fun
