I’ve had the pleasure of being the special guest at several summer camps this month. I have great memories of making friends and learning new skills at summer camp as a kid. When I visit camps to run a sports class my aim is to get all the kids moving, learning new skills, build their confidence and most importantly have fun.
I taught a class for 6-8 year olds and one girl sat on the side during the volleyball part of class. I asked her why she wasn’t playing and she said she wasn’t good at volleyball. I told her it takes practice to learn volleyball and I gave her some tips to practice the bump. After a bit of assistance she was feeling confident and excited to learn a new skill. It was so rewarding to see her enjoying herself and realizing she was capable of more than she thought.
I take a non-competitive and skill-based approach to teaching children fundamental movement skills and sports skills. By removing the pressure to perform and win and by making it fun, children are more likely to give new skills a try without getting discouraged or intimidated. I do my best to make sure no child is left behind or forgotten in class, so they all have a positive experience at Fit For Fun!
